Hydroboost brakes..... Without power steering.

Hey guys..... I'm new to this forum and have searched on this but have not found what I'm looking for. I have a 91 coupe with a 98 4v cobra swap..... I got the car with manual brakes and manual steering. The manual steering part doesn't bother me..... The manual brakes on the other hand make me feel uncomfortable.

So my question is..... Has anyone used a hydroboost set up, without having power steering??

Thanks in advance!!!!

I have not heard of any one using the hydroboost with out the power steering. It should be able to be done by bypassing the power steering rack. Myself I would install a power rack. Good luck and let us know if you run into trouble.

Thanks guys...... I'm considering going ahead with both PS and PB now. I've read about different manual brake set ups and how some liked/disliked them. My car has the SN95 front brakes but still drums in the rear so..... First order of buisness is going to be 13" rotors in front and the 11" in the rear.

As far as lines go for the hydroboost stuff.... Anyone tried making their own braded lines instead of messing with hard line and flaring stuff? I was just curious what people are using....

I've done a lot of braided lines and custom hard lines over the years. IMO you'd be better off hitting a salvage yard and getting a set of SN95 brake lines. They are almost a perfect fit for the fox chassis and will save you many hours of problems. They will also save you some big coin that could go to better use on your build. Even if you're planning to run open track events, the SN95 stuff will be plenty big enough and the cost and ease of installation are hard to beat.

This thing prolly won't ever see any type of track...... I'm just looking to make it easier on the street.

Good call. I'm a firm believer that you can have a car that goes really fast, handles/steers/brakes well and is relatively comfortable all at the same time. You'll find 100 hydroboost installations documented on the web, including several here. download as many as you can find, lay the pics out and build yourself a how-to manual. I'm a factory trained brake specialist (from a past lifetime) and I still use a manual, install instructions, etc. Life is too short to make all the mistakes, learn from ours and make a complete new set of your own...then post'm up.

I agree that is some of the best advice that I have seen in a long time. For the street I'd say add the power rack and keep it simple. The SN lines lay in quite well and will be a lot cheeper.

I would also agree about the power rack. Just pull one off a v8 mustang and install a bumpsteer kit with the fox length inner tie rods. It will handle much better.

For the hydroboost to work, you need to hook it up to your power steering pump. Mustangs have 2 different ones. CII and CIII. You could bypass the steering rack, but you are looking at spending some time with custom lines.

I know I'm bringing this back from the dead but I ran across this post while researching installing hydroboost on my car with parts from a 98GT.

You can run hydroboost without powersteering as shown in the following link. I can't tell you how much it cost but I ran across the link on Hydratech Braking Systems FAQ section:

Are you considering using a manual rack? I've seen a number of ways to do this on a fox body. The cleanest one was at a track event. The guy had used a simple two line setup to feed his hydroboost off an older style pump with remote reservoir. He had installed an adjustable pressure relief valve on the high pressure side that sent the excess fluid through a small cooler loop and back into a T-fitting on the low side. I asked about the setup and he told me that the cooler was installed because the fluid would flow so fast at 3000+ rpms that it would get hot. I think you could probably control this a bit with a pulley change as well, depending on the pump you use. I like my power steering, but the manual rack is definitely doable if it meets your needs.

No, I'm not looking to get rid of my power steering at this time. Just thought I'd share the link in case someone is looking to do this and may find the info useful. :)
