Bay Area California 2v swap into 88GT

Hello all. Found this board and I'm hooked. I live in California and smog laws are drastic. I've changed my mind on my set up many times. I think I've settled on a 2001GT swap. I own both cars, so the donor is available.

Donor: 2001GT 5spd car. Originally it was a automatic and I did the 5spd conversion. I've owned the car since 2003 and have had no issues. I am gonna pull it and refreshn it up. Might port the PI heads or buy some TFS heads. Gonna use the PI intake and ref and smog the car.

My car is a 88GT t-top. My family is the original owners. Currently I'm welding up the engine bay. I will be posting pics.

Thanks.

Hi Aaron, welcome to the party. Your 01 GT will make a great donor car. It also helps that you are using a donor that has already passed smog inspections in CA. That lets you do the complete swap right off the donor car, get it smogged and upgrade from there if you choose to. Do you know your local referee? If not, I would make an appointment to meet with him/her and show them that your donor has already passed smog. You can explain that you will photograph the entire transformation to document what they need/want to see. Have fun with it.

Im glad I don't have to pass the smog crap here in KY lol. I would probably pull up with open headers a blazing and say " Well whatcha think am I gonna pass or what " LMAO.

Yeah the smog laws in California are ridiculous. And rumor is CHP is have random emissions check out points. Like DUI check outs. Literally have trailer with sniffer and db meter.

The good news is, you shouldn't have any problems passing a sniffer. I've seen 600+ hp 32valves pass the sniff test perfectly. Just do what you gotta do to make it happen.

Here in Ontario we have strict emissions laws as well. Since my car is older than a 97, I only have to get the a sniffer test from the tail pipe. I didn't bother notifying then of the mod motor swap. Car is much cleaner then 5L so it passes every time.

The problem he will have is that they will look at the year of the motor and expect it to run at that level. That isn't really a problem on one of these swaps. You just have to remember that all the mods have to be CARB certified. That is why I was saying use all the parts from the donor, finish the swap and get it certified, then mod as you see fit. It is much easier to get a mod past the referee after the swap is certified.
