Maximum Motorsports Manual Brake Conversion Kit

Eliminate the problems associated with power-assisted brakes by installing MMBAK-10 new Manual Brake Conversion Kit. While power-assisted brakes are great for a street car, they cause problems for race cars. Drag racers like manual brakes because they eliminate the need for the large and heavy vacuum booster. Road racers benefit even more by switching to manual brakes because power-assisted brakes make brake modulation very difficult. With power assisted brakes, the level of assist changes due to fluctuating engine vacuum. This change in assist causes the required amount of pedal effort to change. The pedal has an inconsistent feel to the driver, and the amount of pedal pressure required changes during braking.

Manual brakes are not affected by changing engine vacuum. The pedal feel remains consistent in all situations, leading to an easier and more consistent braking technique. The increased pedal effort of a manual brake system can provide better feedback to the driver about what is happening between the tires and the pavement. While the pedal requires slightly more effort during braking than power-assisted brakes do, the effort is not nearly as much as a malfunctioning power brake system requires when there is a loss of vacuum from the booster. Why does the MM Manual Brake Conversion Kit not have an unacceptably high amount of pedal effort? Because MMBAK-10 Engineering Team designed a brake pedal arm with the proper mechanical leverage ratio for a brake system that does not have power assist.

Unlike any other manual brake conversion kit, we include a new brake pedal arm. The MM kit only moderately increases the brake pedal effort because we changed the pedal arm geometry, from that of power-assisted brakes to the proper mechanical leverage ratio for non-assisted brakes. With other manual brake conversion kits, the pedal effort is greatly increased because they maintain the power brake geometry, instead of supplying a pedal arm with the correct geometry for manual brakes. MMBAK-10 engineers also designed our pedal to be stronger than the stock pedal arm. We even built a fixture to conduct destructive comparison testing of a stock pedal arm and our new arm. The tests confirmed that our new pedal arm not only has more ultimate strength before permanently deforming, but also is more rigid in normal use. This increased rigidity contributes greatly to better brake pedal feel, as well as to improved control when modulating the brakes.

The MM kit also has a unique pedal pad assembly. The pedal pad bolts to the pedal arm in any one of six possible positions. This allows you to customize the brake pedals position to suit your needs. The pedal pad has two possible fore and aft positions, and three possible vertical positions. This lets you fine-tune the mechanical leverage ratio to suit your preferences. Changing the position of the pedal pad, relative to the throttle pedal, can aid in heel-and-toeing.

The MM kit includes a new, and stronger, adjustable length pushrod that attaches to the pedal arm with a spherical rod end. This attachment method eliminates the sloppy fit of the stock pushrod, further improving the pedal feel.

The MM kit has a CNC machined aluminum adapter block that bolts to the firewall in place of the vacuum booster. This adapter is designed to mount a stock Ford master cylinder. By using readily available Ford master cylinders, you are assured of always being able to find one easily, whether at home or at the track. For most applications we recommend the 1993 Cobra master cylinder, with its 1 bore. Other Ford master cylinders (from 1986-1995) can be used if a different bore size is desired. Look here for brake master cylinders.

Note: To maintain safe stopping distances, install only on cars with rear disc brakes and improved front discs. The Manual Brake Conversion Kit is NOT intended for use with a stock, unmodified braking system. Stopping distances will dramatically INCREASE if the Manual Brake Conversion Kit is used with the OEM small front disc/rear drum braking system of a Fox chassis Mustang.

MMBAK-10 79-93 Brake Conversion Kit
Manual Brake Conversion Kit: Includes a new pedal arm, pedal pad, adjustable-length pushrod, firewall adapter block, brake light switch, adjustable pedal upper stop-bolt, and all necessary hardware. A brake master cylinder is not included. Note: Rerouting and lengthening of the brake hard lines at the master cylinder is required. See here for brake line adapter fitting kits.

For cars that already have had a manual brake conversion kit installed, but need a brake pedal with the proper leverage ratio for a manual brake system, MM offers a kit that does not include the firewall adaptor block.
